Like-for-Like (LFL) Sales Analysis

Awaiting founder definition

This project uses the common retail LFL convention (only stores trading for the full comparison periods). The founder's organisation-specific LFL rule must be confirmed; the brief's own definition takes precedence once supplied.

The scenario and data are provided, but tasks that depend on the undefined business rule are marked and must not be assumed.

Business scenario

Orion Retail reports 12.5% revenue growth for 2025. The CFO asks how much of that is genuine growth of existing stores versus the effect of opening Ankara and closing Baku Airport.

Problem statement

Split 2025 vs 2024 revenue growth into like-for-like growth and the contribution of non-LFL stores.

Learning objectives

  • Define an explicit LFL store set
  • Compute LFL growth and non-LFL contribution
  • Explain how the definition affects the result

Instructions

Convention used: a store is LFL for 2025 vs 2024 if it was open for the entire of both years. Online is reported separately. State every rule. Then test an alternative rule (open ≥ 12 months at the start of the comparison month) on a monthly basis.

Tasks

  1. List stores with open/close dates and LFL status.
  2. Total, LFL and non-LFL revenue for 2024 and 2025.
  3. LFL growth %, and a bridge: 2024 total → LFL change → new store → closed store → online change → 2025 total.
  4. Monthly LFL under the alternative rule.
  5. Explain the difference between the two definitions.

Deliverables

  • SQL
  • Revenue bridge chart
  • Half-page CFO note
